Common Types of Paranormal Activity (And What They Mean)

Not all paranormal activity is the same, and understanding the differences helps reduce fear and misinformation. In paranormal investigations, activity is typically categorized based on behavior, patterns, and interaction. You can hear a knock on a wall, a pencil rolls off a table on its own, TV going on and off, doors opening and closing, closet doors open and clothes are on the floor, faucets running on their own, toilets flushing, flashlights and batteries suddenly drained.

Residual activity is the most common. It appears as repeating sounds, movements, or sensations and is not interactive—similar to an energetic recording left in a space. Some people think that a recurring event at a location such as a parade is an example of residual activity. A phantom horse and buggy are believed to be an example of residual activity.  Intelligent activity, on the other hand, may seem responsive or aware of people present. Intelligent activity is having communication and contact with a ghost.

Other reported experiences include unexplained noises, temperature changes, cold spots, movement of objects, emotional shifts, or physical sensations. These experiences do not automatically indicate something negative. There are friendly and helpful ghosts.

As a paranormal investigator and psychic medium, Eleni Dedes evaluates environmental factors, emotional context, and intuitive impressions together. True paranormal investigations rely on discernment, data and not assumption. The ability to see ghosts, negative entities and demonic/evil spirits adds intangible data to any paranormal investigation. The combination of equipment (tangible data) with psychically seeing apparitions elevates the data and findings regarding a paranormal investigation.
